Ruled by the planet Venus, Motherwort is an herb that I find personally protective and gives me “mama cat” vibes. Motherwort comes through for me as a comforting guard for my energy and helps to keep anxiety at bay. She is calming, but fierce, and if you’re not careful when harvesting, her claws - the plant’s small spikes - will come out and scratch you!

This art is part of a series of pairs of embroideries and paintings that was inspired by the 2022-23 Mars retrograde in Gemini. I found that using a needle (the tiniest sword - associated with Mars) was a helpful way to work with the sharpness that was in the air at the time. In homage to the Gemini twins, I created a small painted companion piece to the embroidery.
